  • Specifying light sources for your application(s)
  • Subjective evaluation survey of different light sources
  • Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating incentive programs

Audience

This basic seminar is designed for end-users, building owners, property managers, facility operators, and building design professionals. Approximately 140 attendees in Berlin and 70 in Shelton participate in lively discussions about their projects. Several participants shared lighting projects where design, functional considerations as well as energy efficiency were very important to the end-users.

Daryl DeJean was invited to join a panel to voice the lighting market's point of view at the April 13, 2010 conference at The Institute for Optical Sciences (IOS) at University of Toronto. More than 40 participants joined in the discussions.

The Institute for Optical Sciences (IOS) is an established cross-discipline research and commercialization centre located on the campus of the University of Toronto. The Institute brings together chemistry, physics, materials science, polymers, nanotechnology, photonics, and advanced engineering that is supported by 27 faculty researchers and their students from the University’s departments of Physics, Chemistry, Material Science and Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering.     Institute for Optical Sciences 4-13-2010

The Institute for Optical Sciences (IOS) at University of Toronto has started a SSL Research Network (SSLNet) to stimulate  Canadian adoption of Solid State Lighting technology.   

SSLNetwork was created to promote advancement of Solid State Lighting in Canada, facilitating communication, collaboration and knowledge transfer between researchers, industries, end-users and government agencies. Benchmarking is more important than ever with State and Federal regulations requiring this important view into a building 's energy performance. The basics of benchmarking from why, how and what to benchmark were reviewed. Daryl DeJean and Lee Stevens reviewed in this three hour presentation the compelling reasons for adopting the five-step energy management and strategic plan recommended by ENERGY STAR®, the web-based resources. The seminar also covered the carbon footprint that can be generated from the free Portfolio Manager tool and ways to easily track energy efficiency projects.  Finally, Daryl and Lee shared the "staged approach" to energy management examples featuring Mark Twain House & Museum, Hartford, CT. David McGrew, Director of Facilities, Reuben Fleet Science Center, a guest speaker on a 2009 natioanl webinar hosted by ENERGY STAR, shared his experience benchmarking in Portfolio Manager.

California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program

“California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program”

Daryl and Lee were asked to be founding members of the California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program (CALCTP) Development Team. They developed the “Market Driver” and “Financing” modules for the program which is being taught to IBEW and NECA contractors to promote the integrity of the design, installation and commissioning of lighting control systems. Numerous all day classes have been taught to date with the attendees being inspired and excited about the new business opportunity for their trade.

As a consultant to San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) Emerging Technologies Program (ETP), Daryl organized one of the most thorough streetlight assessment projects. In an effort to share with customers the lessons learned in regards to advanced broad spectrum street lighting technology, he co-presented the project findings. At the seminars, customers learned from an unbiased viewpoint the exciting potential offered by both induction and LED technology as alternatives to traditional street lighting.

Due to a successful implementation of an LED lighting project at the Mark Twain House Museum, Daryl developed a seminar on behalf of the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund. His presentation provided the basic concepts of LED technology. Feedback from the two seminars indicated how simple Daryl made the key concepts and provided valuable resources for the adoption of LEDs.

Consortium for Energy Efficiency Fifth Annual Industry Partners Meeting October 2008, New Orleans, LA

Daryl was requested to present a follow up to his previous presentation at the Consortium for Energy Efficiency’s January 2008 Program Meeting. As a consultant representing Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), he explained the process which PG&E was using to transfer LED lighting products into their customer incentive programs. The attendees learned the key considerations in conducting the analysis to customer energy efficiency program incentive development for LEDs.

Due to Daryl’s involvement in sharing his knowledge about LED technology with Hawaiian Electric Company’s Conservation Team, he was asked to present at the 2008 Energy Expo. His goal was to explain the “new” perspective of lighting, a paradigm shift: the change required in selecting lighting sources for applications due to LED technology. Many attendees commented on the value of Daryl’s explanation of the available resources to assist customers in comparing traditional light sources to LEDs.

Recognized for being “in touch” with the customer, Daryl was asked to present at a Department of Energy Workshop for the SSL Commercialization Initiative. The purpose of his talk was to share with the solid state lighting industry the key considerations to consider as the technology is further developed for wide scale market adoption. The Marketing Director for Permlight, an LED product manufacturer, shared how beneficial the presentation was in connecting his approach to product development and marketing to the customer.

Consortium for Energy Efficiency Program Meeting January 2008, Long Beach, CA

As a consultant to Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Daryl was asked to represent and present on behalf of PG&E at the Consortium for Energy Efficiency Program Meeting. The purpose of the presentation was to share with other utility partners key issues to consider when developing incentives for LED lighting. Attendees learned the importance of developing minimum specifications for incentifying LED lighting products.
